Add Waterproofing Materials
Use flexible, self-adhesive flashing to seal the niche.
Next, add a polyethylene vapor retarder to keep the framing dry.
Cut out the shower niche opening with a utility knife.
The bottom strip of flashing membrane should overlap the vapor retarder at the base of the shower niche.
Then, use silicone caulking to seal the edges and any staple holes.
Apply a 12-inch continuous bead of joint sealant on all 4 inner edges of the wallboard in the opening.
Place the niche in the opening.
Smooth out the excess sealant with a standard putty knife.
After taping the shower niche, use a trowel or putty knife to apply thinset mortar.
Wait for the mortar to dry, then use a sanding block to knock down any imperfections.
