The right pressure washer for you depends on the surface you’re cleaning.
More delicate surfaces should be treated with less pressure, and stuck-on muck requires more power behind the spray.

You risk damaging a surface by assuming a stronger force or lingering on one spot will remove build-up.
Rather than relying on water alone, use a cleaning solution.
“Soap can help to break things down better,” says Sarkar.
Cleaning solutions can be applied with or without the pressure washer.
Sweep away large debris such as rocks and twigs, which could become projectiles when sprayed.
Cover nearby plants and landscaping with a tarp.
House and garage exteriors require additional consideration.
Shut off the electricity to exterior outlets on or near surfaces you’re pressure washing.
This will protect the structural integrity and prevent water from leaking behind exterior coverings.
Assemble the Pressure Washer and Accessories
For gas-powered models, add fuel and lubricant as directed.
Nozzles with smaller degrees offer a stronger, more direct spray.
Your pressure washer may come with many or all of these nozzle types.
Home exterior projects generally use a low-pressure detergent nozzle and a 25- or 40-degree spray.
It’s also wise to avoid pressure washing painted and fragile surfaces like oldbrick, wood, andstucco.
Research the material you intend to clean before getting started.
Always err on the side of caution when determining how to use a pressure washer on your surface.
Consistent pressure from your home’s water source is necessary to keep the washer working smoothly.
Test Your Pressure Washer
If you aren’t wearing it already, put on your safety gear.
Turn on the water supply by fully opening the spigot.
Now you are ready to turn on the pressure washer.
If you’re using the pressure washer to apply the detergent, dispense it using the low-pressure soap nozzle.
Manufacturer instructions will advise how long to let the detergent sit before washing.
Aim the spray horizontally for decking or level surfaces, not directly down.
Walk closer and adjust the angle of the wand until the surface is clean.
Don’t get too close to the surface with the nozzle, as this will cause damage.
Once you’ve found the right position, get to cleaning.
Spray away from yourself, especially with horizontal surfaces.
For even cleaning, use overlapping strokes, and don’t linger with direct pressure on one spot.
Avoid directly spraying covered items and areas vulnerable to water leaking into the home, such asdoors and windows.
Repeat, Rinse, and Store
Repeat the soaping and washing process as necessary.
Rinse any residue with the low-pressure soap nozzle or a hose attached to your home’s water supply.
“There are tons of accessories to make each job easier and faster,” says Sarkar.
Consider Renting
Pressure washers are available for rent at home improvement stores.
Check the Weather
Avoid pressure washing during high temperatures and in direct sunlight.
