Its a perpetual getaway in photographer Gray Malins California home, where his own imagery sets a coastal tone.

If you look at all my work, youll see there is a lot of symmetry, he says.

I love composing my interiors in the same style, with symmetric lines and strong composition.

A breaking-wave photo that Gray shot from a helicopter inspired the design of his familys living room.

We really wanted to lean into the coastal environment, he says.

New built-ins offer tuck-in spots for the familys travel finds.

This is the first time that we have a true formal dining room, Gray says.

In our previous home, our dining room became our playroom.

Gray and Jeff freshened the kitchen with acalming blue paint coloron the cabinets and quartzite countertops.

They painted inky ceiling beams white for a sense of lightness.

One of Grays photographs hangs with hook-and-loop tape, which allows for easy removal when cooking splatter-risky foods.

Their kids, 5-year-old Max and Dove, both have blue rooms with natural textures.

But each room is uniquely designed, allowing the personality of its occupant to shine.

Maxs bedroom goes nautical with anantique mirrorthat reflects the ceilings starry-sky wallpaper.

Designing for Family

The backyard firepit gets heavy use to keep everyone warm on chilly evenings.

Also warming up the look are the woven rattan chairs and sofa with plush cushions and chinoiserie garden stools.

We use ourbackyard for familya lot.

It makes sense for us where we are at this life stage.
