What Is the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map?

Each Zone is 10F warmer (or colder) in an average winter than the adjacent Zone.

The lower the Zone number, the colder the region.

The two subzones in each Zone represent 5F increments.

This means you might expect the plant towithstand the coldest winter temperaturesin your area.

But what if you live in Zone 4?

Temperatures in these areas can get down to -50F in the winter.

Zone 3 plants can withstand cold temperatures of -40F to -30F.

Plants rated for this Zone can withstand temperatures of -10F to 0F.

Plants designated as hardy in Zone 7 can handle temperatures of 0F to 10F.

Plants that are hardy in Zone 9 can withstand temperatures as low as 20F to 30F.

Besides much of California, southern Texas, Louisiana, and Florida also fall into Zone 9.

Here, plants won’t tolerant temperatures below 40F to 50F.

There is no frost whatsoever.
